Why Chant?

The human voice is our most portable, most readily available musical instrument.

Everything is vibration. So, when we sing in a devotional way (chant), we tune our body instrument to the frequency of our Highest Potential. We find the acceptance, the beauty, the joy, and the validation within our own Self.

I know how these sacred mantras can lift us beyond our limited reality, into a blissful and ecstatic space, and I love to share that experience with others.

Chanting and happiness

Joy is the evidence of our spiritual connection. The feeling of JOY tells us we are moving in the direction of our ever-expanding Source. It feels GOOD to be tuned to the frequency of our vision, our mission, our purpose. That is all joy is. It is simple to achieve because it is our natural state. So long as we aren’t preventing our self from feeling our innate joy, it is the default setting. Any way that we can raise our vibration is in itself a CHANTING experience because we are vibrating the cells of our body to the frequency of our Source. There are many ways of “chanting”, but a very effective way is through the voice because it resonates the entire body with harmonizing and aligning sound.

LONG BIO

Porter Singer (formerly known as "Sirgun Kaur") is a spiritually-inclined music-maker and personal coach. She was raised moving back and forth between Los Angeles and Southern France, and spent her adult life studying music at Brown University in Rhode Island, and making music in Connecticut and then Arizona. In the midst of constant change (including name changes!), one element has remained consistent in Porter's life: Music.

From collecting nursery rhymes as an infant, sharing her adolescent woes with a sympathetic piano, to touring the United States as a singer-songwriter and producing her first album in her early 20s, it is no surprise that Porter was destined to pursue a calling of music.

Urged by her mother not tp lose her authentic voice by way of vocal lessons, Porter developed her own sound by listening to her favorite artists, turning poems into songs, recording her music on a karaoke machine, and taking jazz piano lessons while studying at Brown University - the latter of which was encouraged by her father. Her piano instructor at Brown helped Porter learn new ways to create her own songs.

In 2009, she discovered Kundalini Yoga, chanting, and mantra, and the power of music as a means of connection to Source. During this time, she changed her name to Sirgun Kaur, and along with authoring many more recordings, she trained to become a personal coach. Her life experiences have taught her that every person has the capacity to be their own greatest teacher. Both her music and her teachings are designed to assist humanity in a gradual shedding of resistance, and an eventual discovery of ease and receptivity—where the joy is! It was at this time that she decided to begin using her original spiritual name again: Porter Singer.

Porter has released nine albums as “Sirgun Kaur” (Mantraspheric: Aad Guray Nameh, For Pamela, Let There Be Peace, -8, Minux Vox, Reclaim Your Happiness, Dayaal, The Cosmic Gift, and The Music Within), and one album as “Porter” (The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy).

As a mother of two energetic boys, Porter initially thought raising children would be a barrier to her music, but has found the opposite to be true. She recorded her debut solo album, The Cosmic Gift, soon after her first son was born. In fact, he was nursing while her recorded the majority of the vocals. Motherhood has enabled Porter to become more disciplined, diligent, and appreciative of her ability to make music. Her music has been used by various healers in both spiritual- and medical-based practices. Dr. Joel Kahn, a prominent holistic heart surgeon in Michigan, recommends her music to his patients. Porter has performed in Europe and across the United States, leading conscious festivals such as Bhakti fest.

Throughout her musical journey, Porter has lovingly realized that she has no control over who listens to her music and how it is interpreted. She strongly feels that the intention she puts into her music translates accurately to each recipient, regardless of where it ultimately ends up.

Sirgun currently resides in Washington.
